The world, only slightly improved
The world in my paintings is usually quieter than the real one. Homes look lived in, seasons matter, animals play a central role, and gardens are allowed to be a little unruly.
Hedgerows appear often – partly because they shape the landscapes I return to, and partly because they are among the richest habitats we have, full of birds, insects, and life.
Nothing very dramatic usually happens in my work. Someone makes tea, a dog steals a biscuit, something comes into flower, the weather shifts.
Small things, perhaps – but not insignificant ones.
Quiet, seemingly idyllic scenes can hold a deeper truth beneath their surface – in the way we share our world with animals, landscapes, and the spaces between them.
Hi, I’m Birgit,
I am an Austrian artist. I work in oils and digitally on an iPad.
Much of my work begins with a respect for nature and wildlife – for landscapes that are still allowed to be untamed, for places where life is not entirely managed into submission, and for the idea that beauty often appears as a side effect of things simply being left as they are.
This is not limited to remote landscapes. I find it just as often close to home, in gardens where structure and a more natural state exist side by side – places that are still cared for but not sealed off from life. A clipped hedge with a slightly uneven base, a tidy path with moss in the cracks, a corner left for leaves to gather. Hedgehogs still finding what they need, birds moving through what has been planted – small systems quietly overlapping.
There is a balance in these spaces – neither controlled nor abandoned, but shared, with human intention on one side and nature continuing on the other.
This version of the natural world often finds its way into my work.
Forest animals, dogs and cats often appear in my paintings – usually with a hint of mischief.
What you'll find here
Painted and illustrated work based on small, everyday scenes – nature close to home, animals moving through gardens and hedgerows, and domestic moments where nothing much seems to happen, yet something is always going on.
They are lived-in environments, slightly imperfect, where wildlife and human life overlap without much ceremony, and where a little humour often appears unexpectedly.
The work is made for people who enjoy creating a relaxed atmosphere in their homes – warm, unpolished, and personal, with space for things to feel unforced.
A way of bringing a quieter mood into everyday spaces: scenes that sit alongside daily life rather than competing with it.
I painted this cosy cottage in Sweden.
